Methodology
How KneeEd reads your sessions
Your plan adapts based on what you tell us and what your sessions show. Here is what our system does, what it does not do, and where a real clinician should always be the judge. Plain language, real architecture, no marketing.

What KneeEd does
- Reads the survey you complete and produces a multi-week movement plan with phases tuned to your category: Recovery, Performance, Prevention, or Maintenance.
- Adjusts your plan after each session based on the pain and difficulty you report. A plan that was the right shape last week may not be the right shape today.
- Generates short coaching prompts before, during, and after sessions, voiced for where you are in the program.
- Catches contraindications before they reach you, via a deterministic safety stage that the AI cannot bypass.
What KneeEd is not
- Not a diagnosis. We do not tell you what is wrong with your body.
- Not a prescription. Plans are educational, adherence-support tools, not medical treatment.
- Not a substitute for your physical therapist, physician, or surgeon. Bring your plan to them. We help you stay on track between visits.
- Not an emergency service. If pain is severe, sudden, or paired with new symptoms, stop and seek qualified help.
The pipeline
Eight stages, one plan
Your plan passes through eight stages from intake to delivery. Some stages use AI; some are deterministic rules. Safety is always deterministic.
- 01Stage 1 of 8
Profile extraction
AIReads your survey and produces a structured profile: region, condition, severity, surgical status, activity goals.
- 02Stage 2 of 8
Protocol matching
RuleMaps your profile to a clinical protocol template: peer-reviewed, condition-specific, with phase progression rules.
- 03Stage 3 of 8
Exercise pool
RuleBuilds a candidate pool of exercises filtered by region, phase, difficulty, and contraindications for your condition.
- 04Stage 4 of 8
Exercise selection
AISelects and customizes specific exercises from the pool to fit your phase, frequency, and progression rate.
- 05Stage 5 of 8
Safety validation
RuleThe non-negotiable stage. Cross-checks every prescribed exercise against contraindications. AI cannot override.
- 05bStage 6 of 8
Quality evaluation
AIScores plan quality on completeness, safety surface, and patient relevance. Non-critical: fails open with logged warnings.
- 06Stage 7 of 8
Nutrition guidance
RuleGenerates condition-aware nutrition recommendations: recovery-supportive macros, anti-inflammatory considerations.
- 07Stage 8 of 8
Product recommendations
RuleSurfaces orthopedic supports, braces, or recovery tools relevant to your condition. Non-critical, can be skipped.
Safety
Stage 05 catches what AI misses
Every plan passes through a deterministic safety validator before delivery. The validator is a rule engine that cross-checks every prescribed exercise against contraindications for your specific condition, surgical status, and current phase.
The AI cannot override safety stage output. If a flagged exercise reaches the safety stage, the validator removes it and substitutes a safe alternative from the same category. Operators are notified of every safety catch.

Clinical advisors
A clinical advisory board, forming.
We are forming a clinical advisory board to review every protocol template before release. These seats are open. We announce each advisor here once their credentials are verified and they have signed the public disclosure agreement.
Orthopedic rehab
Seat in formation
Seeking: Licensed DPT, orthopedic specialty
Will review the knee and hip protocols across the Recovery and Performance categories.
Sports medicine
Seat in formation
Seeking: Board-certified sports medicine MD
Will review contraindication coverage and surgical-status gating in the safety validator.
Rehabilitation science
Seat in formation
Seeking: PT with a PhD in rehabilitation science
Will review the adjustment algorithm and outcome measurement.
Athletic training
Seat in formation
Seeking: Certified athletic trainer, ATC and CSCS
Will review the Prevention and Maintenance categories.

Regulatory posture
Where we sit, by design
KneeEd is an educational and adherence-support product, not a medical device and not a covered entity. Our posture is built so that the day a partner asks for a Business Associate Agreement or a state attorney general asks how we handle consumer health data, the answer is already in production.
HIPAA
PHI-shaped data handling
Patient data is treated as PHI. RLS-enforced per-user isolation on every authenticated query. The admin client is reserved for service operations and writes an audit-log entry for every mutation it performs.
In productionMHMDA + state privacy
Consumer health data, by the letter
Data Subject Rights are handled within the 45-day window required by Washington's MHMDA. AI plan generation requires a per-event consent record, separate from Terms of Service acceptance, and re-consent fires on material model changes.
In productionFDA posture
Education and adherence support
KneeEd is educational and adherence-support software. Not a medical device, not a diagnostic, not a treatment. SafetyBanner and HealthDisclaimer surfaces ship on every plan and we do not make therapeutic claims anywhere in our copy.
In productionSecurity posture
What enterprise diligence sees
The controls below are either in production or in active execution. We label each one honestly so a clinic admin or an investor can audit our claims against reality.
- 01
SOC 2 Type 1
Audit underway
Type 1 attestation is in progress with our audit partner. Type 2 follows the standard observation window once Type 1 closes. Current status, scoping, and target attestation date available under NDA.
In progress - 02
Enterprise contracts
BAA-ready posture
Our data handling, vendor list, and incident-response procedures are structured so that signing a Business Associate Agreement with a partner clinic or health system is a paperwork step, not a re-architecture project.
In production - 03
Penetration testing
Quarterly third-party reviews
We engage a third-party firm for penetration testing on a quarterly cadence. Findings are tracked to closure with severity-tiered SLAs and the most recent report summary is shareable with prospective enterprise customers under NDA.
In progress - 04
Data portability
FHIR R4 export
A clinician-readable JSON export is live today at /api/account/export and is audit-logged on every request. The full FHIR R4 resource bundle (Patient, Observation, CarePlan) is in development and will land at /api/fhir/Patient/[userId]/$everything.

Per-plan transparency
See how your plan was built
Every plan you generate carries a pipeline trace: which stages ran AI, which ran deterministic rules, which substitutions the safety stage made. Visible from your plan detail page.

What changed and when
v2026.05.2
2026-05-06
Added a public platform stats strip, a clinical advisory board surface, and explicit regulatory and security posture sections so investors, partner clinicians, and reporters see real numbers and named controls before the prose.
v2026.05.1
2026-05-04
Disclosed that we are pursuing Business Associate Agreements with our AI vendors, and added a Minors and Family Accounts section so a parent, coach, or athletic trainer can manage athletes ages 13–17 with full responsibility for consents and data.
v2026.05.0
2026-05-03
First public methodology release. KneeEd's plan engine now describes itself in plain language: what it reads, what it suggests, and where a real clinician should always be the judge.
